Useful information for foreign tourists shopping in the Cotswolds and England

Most shops are open from 9 am in the morning until 5.30 or 6 pm in the evening, Monday to Saturday. Extended hours apply in the few weeks before Christmas. Most small shops apart from newsagents are closed on a Sunday.

Supermarkets are generally open from 9 am until 10 pm in the evening, except on Sundays when restricted opening hours of 10 am – 4 pm apply. Small supermarkets in towns may close much earlier.

Shops do not generally close for lunch except in villages. Those in villages may also close at half day on a Wednesday.

Sizing of footwear and clothing is completely different in England to the USA and other countries so do use a size guide to obtain a conversion before you arrive.

Fresh food that needs to be weighed may still be shown in Imperial measurements, pounds and ounces, in outdoor markets.

Farmer's markets are often held just once a week and sell foods of a high quality.
