Holidays in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Cotswolds is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the heart of England. Not only is the countryside lovely but also the villages. Planning laws control the building of new properties and changes to listed buildings and this has ensured that all building is in harmony with the honey coloured stone that the Cotswolds are famous for.

The villages, walls dividing up fields, shops and railway stations are all of a similar mellow hue.

Most beautiful places in the Cotswolds

Inevitably, some places in the Cotswolds are more beautiful than others and if you have only a short period of time on holiday you will want to see the best first.

The villages with rivers running through them are especially picturesque. The scene of cottages standing on the riverbank at Fairford (above photo) is charming. Stop at Fairford to admire the church and its medieval stained-glass windows. Also visit Lower and Upper Slaughter and Bourton-on-the-Water for more riverside scenery and ducks to feed.

For thatched cottages, visit Minster Lovell.

Woodstock is a lovely small town with antique shops, a very good bakery and tea shop, butchers and interesting small shops. The town has a historic association with Blenheim Palace on its outskirts. Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim in 1874. The town museum has a room dedicated to the towns historical links with Blenheim Palace and the Dukes of Marlborough.

Chipping Campden is considered to be one of the most attractive market towns. The villages of Stanton and Stanway are also worth visiting.

In the southern Cotswolds, visit the picturesque hills of the Golden Valleys near Stroud, the Duntisbourne Valley for lovely scenery and the and the villages of Minchinhampton, Coaley Peak and Painswick.

Stop at good country pubs for lunch or dinner en-route and you can enjoy great days out exploring the Cotswolds.
